Other than a power switch, a volume control, and a USB port on the unit's right side, all user controls are accessed via the responsive touch-screen display. The only thing missing is a remote control. Weighing just 9. Showing off 64, hues and xpixel resolution, the c's 3.
Unfortunately, when viewed in direct sunlight, it loses some of its sharpness. But the built-in speakers are loud and clear, so you won't be left completely on your own to find your way. There's also a connector for an optional external antenna for better satellite reception. Designed to work right out of the box, the Garmin StreetPilot c comes preloaded with MapSource City Select street-level maps of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, and it contains more than 5 million points of interest POI , such as hotels, airports, eating establishments, local attractions, shops, and more.
And of course, powering the whole device is a WAAS-enabled channel receiver and an integrated patch antenna to lock on to GPS satellite signals. Navigating through the menu screens is a breeze, thanks to the touch screen and the use of big, colorful icons to guide you through the process.
After powering up the c, you're given two choices: Where To and View Map. The Where To icon takes you to another screen, where you can select locations in your immediate vicinity, in another city, or closest to your final destination. You can search by address or use the POI icons to locate hospitals, auto services, transit hubs, and other points. Once the c lists the available locations, simply press Go, and a route is calculated from your current position to your chosen destination, complete with text and voice-guided turn-by-turn directions.
Did not want all the other bells and whisles. I called the Garmin tech. Waiting time was about 40min. I asked the tech. I said looking at this site right now there has been a number of people that got a free update. He said it may have been a different reason,or person,or what ever, but no free update for me he said.
He also said with the C the map it will not all fit on the C He said with the ,via my may not notice awhole lot of changes. He said if I only travel a few cities where there is not a whole bunch of street changes then I should just stick with my America NT v8 Deluxe april He is right I don't travel a lot around city to city, there is growth, but no biggy on changes that I would miss or need.
One thing the guy was not pushy to sale me anything, like some Tech. I kept my cool because some of you got the Free Update. Oh well. I'm still a happy camper. Maybe in a few years or more I'll go for a better GPS. Right what I have sure does help me a whole lot at work. I mean a whole lots.
Ron How long have you had your GPSr. Free update possibility is only for past 3 months. Otherwise you might try another call. With your unit you will to choose between Lower 48 and Canada although you can reload if you need the other. Admittedly it took a couple of e-mails to Garmin Tech Support, but it was sent, installed and working just fine except, of course, Canada is loaded separately if wanted.
Not trying to start a war here, just wanted those who are interested that persistance does pay off, keep trying Hi mkahn. I bought my C July I even told the Garmin tech when I bought it.
I would like to see from Garmin a written statement that I can't get a free update being that some of you are getting the free update, and some not. I spent about 45mins waiting on the phone to get the tech James,I wrote his name down in case I try again.
I received that info from a tech bulletin from Garmin. Thanks NickJr, seems that Garmin is not consistant in several areas of this update. Me thinks that the policy is evolving as time progresses. Guess that explains all the confusion on this site about updates. Best of luck to all those who are trying for the update, I'm going fishing Ron It might take several calls. I would emphasize that you just purchased the unit a few days ago and expected it to have the latest maps.
Good luck. As for me, I purchased my unit in October and just purchased the map upgrade. A year ago, when I chose the c, the choice was between getting TTS and bluetooth or not needing them.
The c offerred better screen quality and sound still does than the Nuvi. There was no mention that it had less disk space and wouldn't hold the next release of maps. On the other hand, it really doesn't matter to me as I loaded the full maps using the SD card. I am very happy with my unit. I call support today for a free upgrade. No problem and it's on the way. You have to have purchased your c on May 1, or later. Support could not have been better.
I purchased my Garmin on May 21, I talked to Paul Robbins at Garmin. May 1 is the cut off date. Of course, like all other owners, I realized right away that the maps were out-of-date. After reading all of these posts and almost giving up hope, I gave customer service a call. I was on hold for about 10 minutes.
When they finally picked up, I acted a little naive and asked simple questions to butter him up. I expressed how very excited I was to have my new Garmin, but disappointed in having the older maps. Customer service was helpful and patient They are on back order and mine will arrive in weeks. I also purchased the c from wallyworld on black friday.
I called customer support multiple times on Monday and every time they refused to give me the updated map for free. I guess the rules changed. By the time I add in the cost of the unit and the map update, I probably could have purchased a newer, smaller, and supported model.
Well, the mapset v. I never had any problems with it except for in DC it would get confused for a few minutes but never got me totally lost! After the blur that was Black Friday, it's hard to keep all those purchases straight. Still an unbeatable deal! I got Turned down for my free upgrade a few months ago until I registered it at My Garmin. Good luck getting your free update.
I hope you have the same success I did! Sent an email stating that I loved the unit, but found out that the maps are old. They are sending me my new maps in the mail. They said it could take weeks to recieve thought. Using the diagnostic screen i can see that the unit is not detecting the SD card 'no card inserted'. They both startup with the message 'cannot unlock maps'.
But this message shows that these units are working well. When i entered the diagnostic page in the Best Buy unit it does recgonize the SD card size, etc, etc. It seen an absurd to me, it seens unbelivable. Does anybody know something about this issue? In the U. You can read the 2xx other reviews for that. I will tell this much: c is a great unit for one heck of a price shipped!!! You really just take it out of the box and it's ready to go.
First off, I've never owned any GPS equipment. So even though higher models like the c speaks the street names, or the nuvi is no bigger than a deck of cards, the c has everthing a gps newb needs to get around town, or across the country. US and Canda are already loaded.
I really wanted the Nuvi but it was out of my price range. It's got most major restaurants, gas stations, attractions and a bunch of other categorized POI's that I'll probably never need, but just nice to know they exist if I need them As far as the voice nav goes she usually tells me to turn when it's at.
I think the 'turn' prompts can be a bit sooner, but as long as you're aware you will be fine. Now it would be nice if it said the actual street name, but all it takes is a quick glance to see which street she's talking about and you're on track. The text on the screen is clear and readable.
